What do we doo?

It's simple - we come out to your home once or twice a week, whichever you prefer, and then find, scoop, and haul away the dog waste. We charge your credit card or bill through the mail / email once a month, and you can stop service at any time.

We keep a good sense of humor about what we doo ("our business is picking up", "we're # 1 in the # 2 business", "my backyard is hounding me"...) But rest assured we're completely serious when it comes to keeping your yard green and your shoes clean! (tm)

• Since 1998, we have been licensed, bonded and insured. A copy of all certificates will be made available to you upon your request.

• Our tools and boots are sanitized with an EPA approved parvocide & disinfectant. While we do disinfectant kennels and dog runs, we do not "disinfect" yards or apply chemicals to your lawn in any way. In 10 years of experience, no available product will penetrate deeply enough to do any real good, and we do not want clients to spend money on products claiming otherwise.

• YOUR GATE WILL BE CLOSED COMPLETELY WHEN WE COME & GO. One of the most frequent questions we receive is, will we make sure the gate is closed. Of course we will check that is done - twice. We are all dog owners and lovers here. The last thing we want to risk is your children or dogs getting out.

• We work in all weather. We may run late if there's lightening - our tools are metal so we stay indoors until it is safe to resume our dog waste removal work.

• We send the same person to your home every week. It is important to build a relationship with our clients, their family and pets. So you will see the same smiling face each and every week (and go ahead and let your dogs out to say "hello" to us - it's the biggest perk to the job!)

The Pooper Scooper | No Joe Schmo

Fifteen years ago, Cara Brown had a “movie moment” revelation: she would switch careers from computer consultant to dog-poop remover. Brown and her business partner, Erin Erman, shut down their stressful tech startup for a different kind of stress: figuring out how to scoop frozen poop without ruining clients’ lawns.

When the two women opened Dirty Work, they were the ones finding, scooping, and hauling away dog waste. Now, they employ four scoopers in order to focus on the business. The windows of Brown’s Toyota Tacoma are plastered with signs reading Got poop? We scoop! and Picking up where your dog left off. On any given day, she’s awake by 4 a.m. and out the door by 5:30 a.m. – and for the next 12 or 14 hours, she checks on the company’s pickup trucks, coordinates schedule changes, meets with prospective clients, and occasionally scoops (hey, a girl’s gotta stay grounded).

Dirty Work has managed to thrive in a down economy; Brown claims the pet sector is relatively recession-proof. “People will need [our services] until dogs start learning to use the toilet,” she says. Reliability is a tenet central to their business model: employees scoop in rain, sleet, and snow. They scoop from sweltering 100-degree weather to frigid 10-degree weather, when they chip away at piles of poop with long metal spades, which act like ice picks.

Our metro dogs don't use the toilet.  Rain and irrigation washes the waste into creeks, storm drains & street runoff (which isn't treated at wastewater plants). We always double-bag collected dog waste and dispose of it in a manner exceeding all regulations and EPA guidelines. Remember, when your dog goes on the lawn, it doesn't just stay on the lawn!

(1) Zoonotic Diseases (passed from animal to human).  Children and infants are the most vulnerable. Considerations are roundworm (lingers in the soil), Toxacara Canis, which can cause blindness. Hookworms. Campylobacter (Campylobacteriosis – a bacterial infection carried by dogs and cats that frequently causes diarrhea in humans), Adenovirus, E. coli, Listeria, Toxocariasis – roundworms usually transmitted from dogs to humans, often without noticeable symptoms, but may cause vision loss, a rash, fever, or cough.  And this is just a partial list.

(2) Urban and storm water pollution.  The EPA and many state and local agencies are learning and reporting on the dangers and effects of dog waste on waterways.  The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) even estimates that two or three days worth of droppings from a population of about 100 dogs would contribute enough bacteria to temporarily close a bay, and all watershed areas within 20 miles of it, to swimming and shellfishing.

(3) Dog waste does NOT make good fertilizer. It contains microorganisms from your dog's digestive system that can be passed along to plants.  A person can become very ill by eating fruits or veggies "fertilized" with dog feces.   Also, compost piles may not get hot enough to kill disease-causing organisms.  Read "The Scoop on Poop"

(4) Insects and pests and odor elimination.

When pet waste is improperly disposed of, it can be picked up by storm-water runoff and washed into storm drains or nearby water bodies. Since storm drains do not always connect to treatment facilities, untreated animal feces often end up in lakes and streams, causing significant water pollution.

Decaying pet waste consumes oxygen and sometimes releases ammonia. Low oxygen levels and ammonia can damage the health of fish and other aquatic life. Pet waste carries bacteria, viruses, and parasites that can threaten the health of humans and wildlife. Pet waste also contains nutrients that promote weed and algae growth (eutrophication). Cloudy and green, Eutrophic water makes swimming and recreation unappealing or even unhealthy.

"SO worth it...

We have 2 dogs of our own plus one foster dog from a rescue. The fosters rotate in as they get adopted out, so we almost always have 3 dogs to clean up after. DirtyWork's employee (in my case Brian) is prompt, efficient and friendly to my dogs. Many of the rescue dogs are fearful or timid and he is kind and gentle with them if he comes into contact with them while on the job. My yard is clean and my dogs are happy. I hired Dirty Work when I was very pregnant with my first child, and bending down to pick up after my 3 dogs became a torturous chore. I have never once questioned their value since. Thank goodness for Dirty Work

I have used Dirty Work since 2001. Being disabled, I would not be able to keep my yard clean without their service. I was considering the fairness of keeping my dog after my car accident for many reasons, including keeping her yard clean and safe and pleasant.

Cara has been my "Scooper," and is so fantastic and helps way beyond what they are paid to do. When I have called the office about an invoice or to change my schedule, they are prompt and helpful and everyone is so sweet.

I would be wary of a bad review from someone who has only posted one review on Kudzu, and it was to tell people to try Dirty Work's competitor. But that's just me.

I can speak for myself and 2 of my friends that I referred to Dirty Work, that they are so helpful and are worth every penny to eliminate an unpleasant task. I would especially recommend them to seniors or those with limited sight / seeing eye dogs or other disabilities. They help you to keep your pet, which is so important for your emotional well being.

A pooper scooper service sounds straight forward enough, but they really go above and beyond. I have watched my scooper when she didn't know I was home, and she was playing fetch with my dog while she worked and gave him a kiss on the head when she left. I saw her test the gate to make sure it was closed tightly and securely. My landscaper hasn't closed my gate in three years, so I REALLY appreciate the extra effort and attention each week, and I feel very safe with my dog out there with her.

I have used these pooper scoopers to do my "Dirty Work" for 6 years, and they are just the best. I thought they'd be like my lawn service, coming all different times of day, leaving the gate open, not coming in bad weather, etc. But they are just the opposite! Friendly folks, very reliable, nice to me (and more importantly, my dogs!)
